Summary
We conducted a short programme of research focussed on feeding preterm babies in Kenya and India. This project included an observational study of current feeding practices for babies born between 1-1.8kg in two hospitals; Kenyatta National Hospital (Nairobi, Kenya) and Sir Sunderlal Hospital (Varanasi, India). We also conducted focus groups and interviews with mothers and health professionals to hear opinions on the priorities for improving care for babies born prematurely. Finally, we undertook feasibility work to understand whether it was possible to conduct a randomised trial of early feeding interventions for preterm babies. We also explored methods of training health professionals in clinical trials as part of this work.
